How Much Meat Do You Need for 20 Guests?

How Much Meat Do You Need for 20 Guests?

Hosting a BBQ for 20 people is exciting — but it’s also one of the most common questions we get at Rendina’s: How much meat should I buy so everyone eats well (but I don’t over-buy)?

A good rule of thumb is:

👉 About 250–300 grams of meat per person

That means for 20 people, you’re looking at around 5 kg to 6 kg of total meatmore if you know your guests are big eaters, or if you’re only serving meat without many sides.

This guide works especially well when you’re mixing a variety of cuts like steaks, sausages, chicken and lamb — giving everyone choice without wasting food.

How That Breaks Down

Here’s a simple breakdown you can follow:

  • Sausages: ~1 kg (great crowd-pleasers and often the first to go)

  • Steak or BBQ Chops: ~2–3 kg (premium cuts like porterhouse or scotch fillet)

  • Chicken Pieces: ~1–1.5 kg (breasts, thighs or drumsticks)

  • Extras (burgers, ribs or kebabs): ~1 kg

💡 Tip: Mix and match — a blend of sausages, chicken and premium cuts keeps everyone happy and balances your budget.

Budgeting for Quality Meat

With premium, locally sourced organic and biodynamic meat from Rendina’s, pricing will vary by cut and seasonal availability. Based on current retail prices (examples from our online shop):

  • Organic Porterhouse Steak — around $21.75 per 250 g

  • Organic Chicken Breast — roughly $22 per 500 g

  • Organic Beef or BBQ Sausages — roughly $17–$18 per 500 g

So for your BBQ:

Item Approx Qty Estimated Cost
Sausages 1 kg ~$35
Steaks/Chops 2.5 kg ~$200–$250
Chicken 1.5 kg ~$65–$70
Extras (burgers/kebabs) 1 kg ~$30–$40
Total ~6 kg $330–$395

(This is a rough estimate — final cost will depend on the mix of cuts you choose and any specials available.)

Want to Save or Upscale?

  • Save money: Add more sausages and chicken (they’re usually less expensive per kg than premium steaks).

  • Go premium: Throw in a few ribeyes or lamb racks for a special touch.

  • Sides & salads: Remember that great sides (salads, bread, grilled veg) fill people up — so you may even reduce total meat needed.
